Texas Apartments: San Antonio Information
San Antonio, Texas, a.k.a. the “Alamo City”, is the 2nd largest city in Texas and the 7th largest city in the United States, and as such it is filled with history, industry and entertainment.
Most people are familiar with the city’s most famous landmarks, the Alamo and the Riverwalk, and with the championship basket ball team the San Antonio Spurs. Many people however, are not aware that those are only two of San Antonio’s many attractions. When a city has been around since 1691 (the first recorded Spanish expedition to the area), history abounds. Besides the Riverwalk and the Alamo, downtown San Antonio also features La Villita historic art village with the Arneson River Theater, Cathedral of San Fernando, The Majestic Theatre, HemisFair Park with the Tower of the Americas and the Institute of Texas Cultures, El Mercado, the Spanish Governor's Palace, and the historic Menger Hotel. The Menger is considered the most haunted hotel in Texas. It was constructed in 1859, and through the years has entertained the likes of O. Henry, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Mae West, Babe Ruth, and Oscar Wilde. San Anotnio’s McNay Art Museum was the first museum of modern art in Texas. San Antonio is also home to a considerable number of theme parks including Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World, Splashtown and the original Schlitterbahn in nearby New Braunfels. While San Antonio is well known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, a twist on traditional Mexican food that focused more the on the cooking style of the border towns, there are many dining options throughout the city. Worthy restaurants include Tre Trattoria, the Roaring Fork, Oloroso, Achiote River Café, and Brasserie Pavil, among others.
San Antonio is no doubt a huge tourist attraction for its history and entertainment venues, but that is in no way its largest economic contributor. San Antonio is a military hub with 5 military bases, including Lackland Airforce Base. It is also a notable medical center for the state of Texas with three Level 1 Trauma centers and the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical center in Texas to combine research and care. Businesses thrive in San Antonio with five fortune 500 companies calling San Antonio home.
